A Rebellious March

She began her San Francisco adventure by marching to the beat of her own drummer. She welcomed the reactions to her untamed persona-- the shock, the appreciation, the consternation, the laughter, the solidarity, the divisions.

She was all bravado in public, yet cloaked herself in self-reproach behind closed doors.

Fuck, if this isn’t a complicated Life. She's a real estate broker, rebel, alpha woman, hotel wife, pollyanna, angel, bad girl, dog lover, equal rights advocate, champion of the underdog.

Her fights are fought with vigor.

Her love is devoted, whole-hearted and raw.

Anger deflates her when it doesn’t enrage her.

She loves with increasing depth, herself and others.

Looking in, she had a dream life.

Looking out, she escaped a gilded cage.

The freedom expands her soul.

She can breathe.

Finally. The cage that contained her now rests in her rearview mirror, and cradles an increasingly complex kaleidoscope of memories.

Black tie galas.

Step and repeat.

Cheeks frozen from smiling.

Philanthropic catfights.

Pretend friends.

Privilege traded for liberty.

Independence hijacked by the unspoken expectation of reciprocity. Expectations overwhelm.

Disbelief precedes distrust.

They almost suffocated her.

Almost.
